It was great to be asked to contribute an article to The Lion and The Dragon, the magazine of the friends of Cumbria's Museum of Military Life.
Carlisle Castle is a great place to visit and get a flavour of the buildings that Felix Burns must have known very well, and where his son Fred served as a Pioneer in the Royal Engineers Signal Depot during the Great War.
No longer occupied by soldiers, the castle is now looked after by English Heritage. It also houses Cumbria's Museum of Military Life; I wonder what Felix would think, if he could see the banners, band instruments, uniforms and other memorabilia from his time on display.
(Check the Castle opening times before you visit - there are seasonal differences.)
The Lion and The Dragon is published four times a year; my article will appear in the Autumn 2024 issue - but enjoy this preview.
Past issues of the magazine are available to download here.
